We’re in the Carpathian Mountains — a vast range stretching across Central Europe, with Gerlach as its highest peak. The Polish Tatras, crowned by Rysy, the Pieniny Mountains with their peak Wysoka, and the Silesian Beskids with Skrzyczne — where we are now — are all part of this great mountain range.
The Sisters Who Carried Water — The Legend of the Vistula River
Once upon a time, among the mountain peaks, lived King Beskid and Queen Borana.
After the king’s death, the queen divided their realm among their children. Their son,
Lan, was given the fields and meadows to tend, while their two daughters, Białka and
Czarnosza, were entrusted with the waters.
When they received their inheritance, the girls descended into the valleys — Białka
running joyfully, Czarnosza moving more carefully. Wishing to learn how far the world
stretched, they decided to send a wave of water northward. They called it Wyszła —
“the one who went” — and asked it to bring back stories from distant lands.
The river journeyed through forests, meadows, and towns, until at last it reached a
great sea. Enchanted by its vastness and beauty, it chose to stay there forever. The
royal sisters waited and waited for its return, but every wave they sent after it simply
followed the first.
And so the Vistula River — rzeka Wisła — was born, and the mountain streams at its
source still bear the sisters’ names.

Sestry, které nosily vodu – Legenda o řece Visle
Kdysi dávno, mezi horskými vrcholy, žili král Beskid a královna Borana. Po králově smrti královna rozdělila jejich panství mezi své děti. Jejich syn Lan dostal na starost pole a louky, zatímco dvě dcery, Białka a Czarnosza, byly svěřeny vodám.
Když převzaly svůj podíl, sestoupily do údolí — Białka běžela radostně, Czarnosza kráčela opatrněji. Toužily poznat, jak daleko sahá svět, a rozhodly se poslat vlnu vody na sever. Pojmenovaly ji Wyszła – „ta, která odešla“ – a požádaly ji, aby přinesla zprávy z dalekých krajů.
Řeka putovala lesy, loukami a městy, až nakonec dorazila k velkému moři. Očarována jeho rozlehlostí a krásou, rozhodla se zůstat tam navždy. Královské sestry čekaly a čekaly na její návrat, ale každá další vlna, kterou poslaly, následovala tu první.
A tak se zrodila řeka Visla – rzeka Wisła – a horské potoky u jejího pramene stále nesou jména sester.
